Why padel courts use glass

Direct answer

Padel uses glass so the ball can rebound off a hard, uniform wall while people outside the court can still see the point. Portable glass courts also took the sport into stadiums and onto broadcasts. Metallic mesh still completes many side walls and does not bounce like glass.

Tennis hides the ball behind a fence. Padel asks you to use the enclosure. Glass solved two problems at once: a true rebound, and a court people can watch.

Why glass, not only mesh

A hard, uniform wall lets you defend a lob that would be a winner on an open court. You can let the ball come off the back glass, set your feet, and play. It also punishes a smash that sits up after the bounce. The wall is in the rules, not an optional backdrop.

In the late 1980s, detachable glass courts — sometimes nicknamed “crystal palace” courts in the sport’s history — made it possible to put a full cage in a plaza or arena. Cameras could see the whole rectangle. That is a large part of why professional padel looks the way it does on your phone.

Mesh still matters

Not every surface is glass. Metallic fencing completes the enclosure on the sides. Bounce off mesh is not the same as bounce off a pane: it is less predictable and often less “true.”

Knowing which wall you are about to use is a skill. Hitting into the fence on purpose can be a plan. Treating every wall as out of bounds is playing a smaller game than the one on the rulebook.

What this means for club players in Pakistan

If you treat the back glass as “out,” you give away balls you are allowed to play. Learning to let the ball come off the wall, then hit, is one of the fastest upgrades for tennis converts.

You also need a racket you can still block with when the ball comes off glass late. That is usually a conversation about sweet spot and weight — Pure Round or Hybrid Teardrop for many club players — more than a conversation about a tour colourway.
