When to smash in padel — and when to wait
Direct answer
Smash when the ball is high enough, you are balanced, and the percentage is real. If you cannot finish, use a vibora or bandeja and stay in the pattern. Attack is a choice. A stiffer racket will not invent timing you have not practised.
Some club players stay solid forever and never end the point. Pairs learn to lob them all night. Other players miss three smashes and lose the game at golden point. Both patterns are incomplete.
The smash is a finishing shot. It needs a ball you can actually finish.

Why defence-only plateaus
If you never take the put-away, especially from the left side for a right-hander, opponents have no reason to stop lobbing. You become a wall. Walls get tired. Fitness helps you stay in those rallies. It does not create a finishing shot you refused to practise.
Comments that say “be more aggressive” are not a drill. Selection is a drill.
Which balls are smashes
Smash when:
- the ball is still high enough at contact
- your feet are set, or your jump still leaves you able to recover
- you have a target (through the door if the venue allows and the ball is right, into the body, or a bounce that does not come back as a sitter)
Do not smash when the ball is already dropping behind you, when you must jump and twist and hope, or when you are off-balance on the fence. Those balls are a bandeja (a controlled, often sliced overhead that keeps you in the point), a vibora, or a leave to glass.
Train it as a choice, not a mood
Basket work: mix high balls you must finish with high balls you must play safe. Call the choice before contact. In matches, decide as the lob is in the air, not after you have already started a desperate swing.
If finishing is new, a more forgiving shape (Pure Round or Hybrid Teardrop) often lets you find the smash before you move to Attack Diamond. A stiff carbon face will not invent the timing. Spec follows the shot.
After you smash
Same rule as the vibora: recover. A smash that comes back is still your point to finish if you are at the net with the racket up. If you smash and admire, you are playing highlight clips, not padel.
